Automatic Gate Key Switch — Types and How It Works

Automatic Gate Key Switch — Types and How It Works
An automatic gate key switch is a wall-mounted, key-operated control that commands your gate motor without a remote. It comes in two working types: momentary (pulse) switches that send a short signal to the control board, and maintained selectors that hold the circuit closed. Understanding which type your gate system needs — board-driven or direct-wired — is the single decision that determines the right unit.

How a key switch commands an automatic gate

Modern gate motors (sliding or swing) run through a control board. The board watches its command inputs, and when a dry-contact input closes — even for a fraction of a second — it executes the full cycle: open, pause, close, obstacle handling. A momentary key switch is simply a secure way to close that input: turn the key, the contact pulses, the board does the rest.

Older or simpler setups without a board wire the switch into the motor supply itself. There the switch must be a maintained selector that physically holds the direction circuit closed while turned. The two types are not interchangeable — a pulse switch on a direct-wired motor moves it for a second and stops.

Momentary vs maintained at a glance

FeatureMomentary (pulse)Maintained (selector)
SignalShort pulse, key springs backStays in position
Connects toControl board input (dry contact)Motor circuit directly
Typical useSliding/swing gates with boards and remotesDirect-wired shutter motors
ContactsNO/NC/COM low-voltageRated for motor current

If your gate already works with a remote, it has a board — you need momentary. If there is no board and no remote, you need maintained.

Choosing the housing: indoor pillar or exposed wall

Gate key switches usually mount on the entrance pillar, fully exposed to sun and dust. An IP54-rated housing is the minimum for Egyptian outdoor conditions; metal bodies outlast plastic under direct summer sun. Flush-mount and surface-mount versions exist for the same internals — the choice is purely about your pillar.

FAQ

Does a key switch replace the remote? No — it works alongside it. The board accepts commands from both: remotes by radio, the key switch by wire. Most gates run both for redundancy.
Which terminals does a gate board use for a key switch?Command inputs labeled START, SBS, PED, KEY or OPEN accept the dry contact. The switch’s NO and COM terminals connect there.
Can one key switch control two gates?Dual-contact models can command two separate board inputs — one per turn direction. Tell us your setup on WhatsApp and we confirm the right unit.
Momentary switch on a motor without a board — will it work? No, the motor will only move while the pulse lasts. Direct-wired motors need a maintained selector rated for the motor current.
What brands do you stock in Egypt?Somfy (France), Beninca and Key (Italy), Pujol (Spain), plus economic alternatives — all supplied with their wiring diagrams.
Is the metal key unique per unit?Units ship with their own key pairs; some model lines offer keyed-alike sets so one key opens all your switches — ask when ordering.
How do I confirm compatibility before paying?Send a photo of your control board terminals on WhatsApp +201098470908 — we verify the input type and confirm the exact unit before dispatch.
