The five automatic gate types at a glance
The table compares the gate types by how they move and which motor family drives them. It describes the category, not a specific model.
| Gate type | How it moves | Motor family that drives it | Space it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swing gate (hinged gate) | One or two leaves turn on hinges, like a door | Swing gate motor — arm type or linear (ram) type, one motor per leaf | Clear area in front of or behind the gate for the leaves to open |
| Sliding gate | A single panel slides sideways along the wall | Sliding gate motor mounted beside the gate, driving a gear rack fixed to the gate | Free wall length beside the opening equal to the gate width |
| Rolling door / roller shutter | Slats roll up onto a barrel above the opening | Tubular motor inside the barrel, or a side (center) motor for rolling doors | Box space above the opening only |
| Barrier gate | A boom arm lifts up and drops down | Barrier with its own built-in motor and control board | Lane width plus the cabinet beside it |
| Folding gate | Several leaves fold together as they open | Swing-type motors on the leaves | Less swing area than a standard swing gate |
Swing (hinged) gates
A swing gate is the most common gate on villas and residential entrances: one or two leaves on hinges. Automating it means one motor per leaf. Arm-type motors fit on thick pillars; linear (ram) motors suit slimmer pillars and longer leaves. What decides the motor is the leaf length, the leaf weight and how much room there is behind the pillar — so a photo of the pillar and the gate from the inside tells the sales team more than any measurement list.

Sliding gates
A sliding gate moves on a floor track (or hangs on rollers in cantilever designs) and slides along the wall. It suits wide entrances and sloped driveways where a swing leaf would hit the ground. The motor sits beside the gate and turns a pinion that drives a gear rack on the gate. Sliding gate motors are rated by the maximum gate weight they can move, so the gate weight is the first thing to confirm.

Rolling doors and roller shutters
Garages, shops and warehouses usually use rolling doors: steel slats that roll up onto a barrel. Light roller shutters are driven by a tubular motor that sits inside the barrel; heavier rolling doors use a side (center) motor mounted at the end of the shaft. The motor is chosen by the door weight, which follows from its width, height and slat type.

Barrier and folding gates
Barrier gates are the boom arms used at car parks, compounds and factory entrances — the arm, motor and control board come as one unit. Folding gates split the opening into leaves that fold together, which saves swing space; they are automated with swing-type motors on the leaves.
What an automatic gate system is made of
Whatever the gate type, the automation around it is built from the same parts. These are the components Abu Seif Steel supplies:
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gate motor (operator, opener) | Moves the gate — the motor family depends on the gate type |
| Control board (gate controller) | The brain of the system: runs the motor, holds the receiver and the settings |
| Remote control (key fob, clicker, transmitter) | Sends the open and close signal to the receiver on the board |
| Photocell (safety sensor) | Stops or reverses the gate when something crosses the beam |
| Key switch or push button | Wired control on the pillar or indoors — opens the gate without a remote |
Each control board works with the remotes made for it, so the remote is matched to the board, not chosen separately. Guides: Automatic gate remotes — full guide · Gate controller and control board · Automatic gate key switch.
Manual (mechanical) gate or automatic gate?
A mechanical gate is simply a gate opened by hand. Most manual swing and sliding gates can be automated later if the structure is sound: the hinges or track must move freely, and there must be room for the motor. The gate itself stays the same — the motor, control board and remotes are added to it. Abu Seif Steel supplies these components only; fitting is done by your own technician.
FAQ
Are electric gates, motorized gates and automatic gates the same thing?
Yes. Electric gate, electrical gate, electronic gate, motorized gate and automatic gate all describe a gate moved by a motor and a control board. The gate type — swing, sliding, rolling, barrier or folding — is what changes the motor.
What is the difference between a swing gate and a sliding gate?
A swing gate opens on hinges and needs clear space for the leaves; a sliding gate moves sideways along the wall and needs free wall length beside the opening. They use different motor families: swing gate motors on each leaf, or one sliding gate motor beside the gate.
Can a manual gate be turned into an automatic gate?
In most cases yes, as long as the gate moves freely and there is room for the motor. The motor, control board and remotes are added to the existing gate.
What is a gate opener kit?
A gate opener kit is the motor together with its control board and remotes — the parts needed to automate one gate. Photocells and a key switch are usually added to it.
Which motor does my gate need?
It depends on the gate type first, then on its weight and size. Send a photo of the gate and the pillars on WhatsApp 01098470908 and the sales team confirms the matching motor.
Do you sell the gate itself?
No. Abu Seif Steel supplies the automation parts — motors, remotes, photocells, key switches and control boards — for gates you already have or are building.
How is delivery handled?
Delivery within hours in Cairo and Giza, and shipping to all governorates. Payment is cash on delivery, bank transfer or InstaPay.
