Automatic Sliding Gate Motor Kit — The Five Parts and How They Match

An automatic sliding gate kit is not one sealed box. It is a set of matched parts: the operator unit, its control board, the toothed rack along the gate, something to trigger it, and photocells for safety. Getting a working gate is mostly a question of making sure those parts match each other.

The five parts, and what each is responsible for

1. The operator unit

The housing that holds the motor and the pinion gear. It is fixed on a base beside the gate so the pinion lines up with the rack. Its rating in kilograms is what has to be matched to the gate weight.

2. The control board

The part that makes the decisions: it reads the trigger, sets the direction, watches the limit inputs that mark open and closed, and reacts to the photocells. It is matched to the supply type of the operator.

3. The toothed rack

The metal strip fixed along the gate that the pinion travels on. It is the part that carries the force from motor to gate, and the quantity depends on how far the gate travels rather than on the motor.

4. The trigger — remote or key switch

A remote is portable and convenient. A key switch is fixed beside the gate, needs no battery and cannot be lost. Shared entrances often use both, and the board accepts either.

A remote has to be paired with the receiver on the board

5. Photocells

A transmitter and receiver facing each other across the opening. If the beam breaks while the gate is moving, the board stops or reverses it. On any entrance shared by cars and people, this is the part that prevents contact.

The three compatibility checks

Most ordering problems come down to one of three mismatches. They are all easy to avoid if the model is known before anything is confirmed.

CheckWhat goes wrong
Board supply typeA 24 V board on a 220 V motor, or the reverse. They are not interchangeable.
Remote pairingA remote that has not been matched to the receiver on that board will not trigger anything.
Rack quantityRack ordered to the width of the leaf instead of the full travel, leaving the gate short of fully open.
The one thing to send first. The motor model and the gate width answer all three checks at once. That is why the sales team asks for them before confirming a kit.

What to have ready before you ask

  • Gate weight — or the width, height and metal thickness so it can be worked out.
  • Gate travel — how far the gate moves to be fully open, for the rack quantity.
  • Power supply on site — 220 V, or three-phase if the site has it.
  • How often it opens — a home gate and a workshop gate are different jobs.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in a sliding gate motor kit?At minimum the operator unit and its matched control board. A working gate also needs toothed rack along the leaf, a way to trigger it such as a remote or key switch, and photocells for safety. Kits are put together from these parts rather than sold as one fixed box.
How much toothed rack do I need? The rack has to cover the full travel of the gate, not only the width of the leaf, because the pinion keeps walking along it until the gate is fully open. Send your gate width and the quantity is worked out from it.
Is the control board included with the motor? The operator ships with the board matched to its supply type. Boards are also available separately, but a 24 V board and a 220 V board are not interchangeable, so the motor model has to be known first.
Can I add photocells later?Yes. The control board has dedicated inputs for them, so they can be supplied with the kit or added afterwards.
Will any remote work with any motor? No. A remote has to be paired with the receiver on that control board. Sending the motor model lets the sales team confirm which remotes match it.
Do I have to buy everything at once? No. Some people take the operator and rack first and add remotes or photocells later. What matters is that the parts are matched to each other, which is what the sales team checks.
